The Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Bello Matawalle, has joined millions of Nigerians and the global Muslim community in celebrating the 70th birthday of His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA.
In a message released in Sokoto on Monday, Matawale described the Sultan’s seven decades on earth as “seven decades of wisdom, humility, and service to humanity,” noting that the monarch has remained a father to all and a custodian of Nigeria’s moral and spiritual values.
“Today we thank Allah for the gift of your life as you mark 70 glorious years,” the Minister stated.
“Your Eminence has been a beacon of peace and unity, not just in Sokoto, but across Nigeria and the Muslim world.”
Matawale, who also holds the traditional title of Shetiman Sokoto, said the Sultan’s reign has been defined by his commitment to strengthening the bonds of faith, promoting interfaith harmony, and giving voice to the voiceless amid complex national challenges.
According to him, the Sultan’s interventions in matters of national security, education, and charity have continued to inspire leaders at all levels. “Your commitment to justice and to peaceful coexistence continues to inspire leaders and communities far beyond our borders,” he added.
As Minister of State for Defence, Matawale noted that the Sultan’s consistent advocacy for peace has provided moral backing to the government’s efforts to secure the nation and protect citizens, particularly in the North-West and other troubled regions.
“In times when the nation needs unity the most, His Eminence has stood firm as a stabilising force. His counsel to the government and to the people has helped to douse tension and promote dialogue,” the Minister said.
On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and his family, Matawale prayed that Allah SWT grants the Sultan long life in good health, increased barakah in his years and work, and the strength and clarity to continue leading with compassion and wisdom.
He also prayed for divine protection upon the Sultan, the Royal Family, and the entire Sokoto Sultanate, saying, “May your reign continue to be one of peace, progress, and blessings for the Ummah. We are truly blessed to have you.”
The Minister concluded that as Nigeria marks another year of the Sultan’s life, citizens should emulate his example of tolerance, scholarship, and service.
The Sultan of Sokoto, installed in 2006, remains the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria and a key voice in national cohesion.(New Telegraph)
