The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Bayelsa State Council has commended the Bayelsa State Government for commencing a headcount of persons living with mental illness in Yenagoa metropolis.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, the NUJ described the move as a proactive step in the right direction and a demonstration that the government is listening to the voice of the people.
The Council recalled that the issue of persons with mental illness roaming the streets of Yenagoa was raised during its recent Congress on June 25, 2026 and captured in the communique issued thereafter.
NUJ Bayelsa therefore lauded Governor Douye Diri for directing the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development to act promptly on the matter.
The Council noted that the exercise will not only help to sanitize the environment but also provide care, treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable persons.
NUJ Bayelsa further assured the State Government of the Union’s continued partnership and support in advancing policies that promote public health, safety, welfare of citizens and good governance generally.
Council also reiterated Journalists’ commitment to playing their statutory role as watchdog of society through objective reportage and constructive engagement.(Mangrovepen)
