As a way to leverage its tourism potentials Rivers State will host Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026
Coordinator of Port Harcourt to the World Goodluck Azunwena told newsmen that the state will benefit a lot in to boost its blue economy blueprint.
About 10,000 runners from West Africa and East Africa are expected to participate in the 21-kilometre 2026 Port Harcourt international marathon scheduled to hold in November 14, 2026.
"The Port Harcourt International Marathon 2026 will attract thousands of participants from Nigeria and across Africa, alongside spectators, tourists, corporate organisations, development partners, and the international sporting community.
“The event is being developed as a world-class marathon that showcases the resilience, hospitality, and vibrant spirit of Port Harcourt while promoting sports, sustainability, and community development,” Azunwena said.
Azunwena stated that the marathon marks a significant milestone in reflecting a broader vision to position Port Harcourt as a leading destination for international sports, sustainable development, tourism, and community engagement.
The PHTTW convener stated that the event themed “Green Race,” is more than a marathon, pointing out that it is a movement that integrates sports with sustainability, environmental advocacy, education, youth development, and economic growth.
“The marathon marks a significant milestone in reflecting a broader vision to position Port Harcourt as a leading destination for international sports, sustainable development, tourism, and community engagement.
“More than a marathon, The Green Race is a movement that integrates sports with sustainability, environmental advocacy, education, youth development, and economic growth. It is designed to inspire healthier lifestyles, promote environmental responsibility, strengthen community participation, and showcase the immense potential of Port Harcourt to the world.
“The Green Race is anchored on three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 – Climate Action. Through these pillars, the initiative seeks to create lasting impact.
Azunwena stated that ahead of the day of the marathon, there will be community fitness programmes, environmental clean-up campaigns, tree planting, a symposium and other activities.
He said, “Ahead of race day, we will roll out community fitness programmes, environmental cleanup campaigns, tree planting, the Green Symposium, and the School Green Club Initiative to ensure lasting impact beyond the marathon.
“Stakeholders and members of the public are invited to be part of this transformative journey, with further details on registration, the official race route, sponsorship, volunteering, and the full programme of activities to be announced in the coming weeks.
