As the NUJ reflects on its legacy, the president urges members to remain steadfast in their commitment to professional integrity and the principles of a free press.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is marking its 70th anniversary, celebrating decades of unwavering commitment to press freedom, ethical journalism, and the defence of journalists’ rights.

Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, NUJ President, while delivering a message to members, expressed gratitude for the dedication and resilience of journalists across the country.

He highlighted the union’s pivotal role in upholding democratic values, ensuring accountability, and amplifying the voices of the marginalised.

“Over the past seven decades, the NUJ has played a crucial role in championing press freedom, defending the rights of journalists, and ensuring ethical standards in the industry,” Abdullahi stated.

“Your commitment to speaking truth to power, holding those in authority accountable, and giving voice to the voiceless is truly admirable and inspiring.”

He stressed that the journey ahead requires continued vigilance and unity to safeguard the independence of journalism in Nigeria.

The NUJ, founded in 1954, has been instrumental in advocating for media rights and fostering a responsible press culture.

Over the years, it has stood as a strong pillar in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, often confronting challenges such as censorship, harassment, and media repression.

Comrade Abdullahi, consequently, called on journalists to renew their dedication to truth, justice, and accountability, ensuring that the press remains a beacon of democracy for generations to come.

He congratulated all NUJ members on reaching this significant milestone.

“Here’s to the next 70 years of excellence in journalism,” Comrade Abdullahi added.
