The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the dates for Nigeria’s 2027 General Elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
Amupitan emphasized that the commission is fully prepared for the electoral process, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022. He stated that the terms of current officeholders, including the President and Governors, will end on May 28, 2027.
He affirmed INEC’s independence in managing the electoral timetable, which has been shared with political parties and stakeholders. The detailed schedule will also be available on INEC’s website. Political party primaries and campaign timelines will adhere to statutory requirements.
Amupitan also addressed the ongoing discussions regarding the Electoral Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, highlighting the importance of enhancing Nigeria’s electoral framework to ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
