The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahya Abdul, has urged journalists across the country to uphold professional integrity, accountability and responsible reporting as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
In a goodwill message marking the end of the Kogi State NUJ Press Week, Abdul said the media must provide citizens with accurate information while holding public officials accountable.
He described journalists as custodians of public trust and essential partners in democratic development.
“As journalists, we are custodians of public trust and vital partners in democratic development. Our responsibility is to inform the electorate accurately, hold public officials accountable and promote transparency, peace and responsible political participation,” he said.
Abdul urged media practitioners to reject misinformation, hate speech, sensational claims and politically motivated narratives that could threaten national cohesion.
“Our duty is to report elections, not inflame them; to inform the electorate, not manipulate it; and to hold power accountable without fear or favour,” the NUJ president said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Kogi State NUJ Council, Ademu Seidu, described the 2026 Press Week as an opportunity for reflection, professional renewal, thanksgiving and celebration.
Seidu appreciated Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for his continued support for journalists and cooperation with the union.
He also commended the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, for strengthening communication and mutual understanding between the government and media professionals.
Seidu assured that the Kogi NUJ would remain committed to objective, balanced and responsible journalism while upholding press freedom and public accountability.
The provision of health insurance coverage for 45 journalists, announced during the Press Week, was highlighted as a major welfare milestone.
The initiative forms part of the state government’s stated efforts to promote journalists’ welfare and strengthen media institutions in Kogi State.(Day Break)
