The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to take urgent measures to cushion Nigerians from the impact of rising petrol prices, which it says are worsening the country’s economic hardship.
NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said petrol is now selling for about N1,430 per litre in some major cities, with prices reportedly higher in less accessible areas.
In a statement, the labour centre called for the introduction of reasonable wage awards for workers, increased supply of crude oil in naira to local refineries and an expansion of national petroleum storage capacity.
The NLC said the latest increase in pump prices is having a ripple effect across the economy, raising transportation costs and contributing to higher prices for food, rent, school fees and other essential services.
According to the union, the resurgence of conflict in the Gulf is partly responsible for the latest surge in petroleum prices and the resulting pressure on domestic fuel costs.
However, the NLC argued that Nigeria’s status as an oil-producing country, alongside growing local refining capacity, should enable the government to develop measures capable of shielding citizens from sharp international market fluctuations.
The labour organisation also called for targeted government intervention to support Nigerians during what it described as an emergency situation.
It further questioned the continued importation of crude oil by local refineries, urging authorities to address supply challenges and strengthen domestic refining as part of efforts to improve energy security and moderate fuel-price pressures.(Douba.com)
