The National Identity Management Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) ecosystem as part of efforts to improve governance, enhance service delivery, reinforce national security, and accelerate socio-economic development across the country.

Speaking at a digital conference themed “Building Africa’s Digital Foundations Together” in Abuja, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, represented by the Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases (IT/IDD), Mr. Sulaiman Falade, said the Commission is driving Nigeria’s digital transformation through strategic reforms, institutional collaboration, and the deployment of secure digital identity systems for citizens and residents.

She explained that the National Identification Number (NIN) remains central to the country’s DPI agenda, serving as a key tool for digital authentication, identity verification, and access to government and private sector services. According to her, the Presidential Directive issued on April 5, 2024 mandates Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to effectively utilise the NIN in policies relating to data capture, biometric authentication, and identity verification across digital platforms.

Coker-Odusote noted that NIMC has already established structures to ensure the effective implementation of the directive, while also advancing the Federal Government’s vision of a unified, secure, and interoperable digital identity ecosystem that promotes transparency, accountability, and seamless service access.

She further stated that through the integration of digital identity systems and the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI), Nigeria is strengthening trust in digital transactions, safeguarding citizens’ data, and encouraging secure online interactions nationwide.

The NIMC boss called on stakeholders in both the public and private sectors to support the ongoing implementation of Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and other related initiatives aimed at improving service delivery outcomes for Nigerians.

She reiterated that NIMC remains committed to leveraging innovation, technology, and secure digital systems to build a more connected, efficient, and resilient nation.(Paradigm News)
