The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council have strengthened efforts to combat fake news and digital disinformation ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, warning that unchecked falsehoods could undermine democracy and public trust.
Speaking during the 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week in Abuja, NITDA Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said the rise of digital manipulation and misinformation poses a serious challenge to credible journalism and democratic stability.
He stressed that while technology has improved access to information, it has also created avenues for spreading false narratives capable of polarizing society and weakening confidence in public institutions.
Abdullahi reaffirmed NITDA’s commitment to supporting journalists through digital literacy programmes, technological tools, and frameworks aimed at promoting ethical reporting and responsible information sharing ahead of the 2027 elections.(Trueverdict.com)
