Following the conclusion of the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting with state Chairmen and Secretaries of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Jigawa State, the National President of the Union, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, held an interactive session with veteran journalists in the state.

During the meeting, which took place at the Jigawa Press Centre, discussions centered on issues affecting effective journalism practice.

Comrade Abdullah urged stronger collaboration between serving and veteran journalists, stressing that mutual understanding is crucial for the union to live up to its name.

The National President also disclosed that the national body is making efforts to enroll union members in a health insurance program, aimed at alleviating the burden of high medical costs when the need arises.

In his contribution, a veteran journalist and former NUJ Chairman, Ex-Managing Director of Radio Jigawa, Comrade Sabo Abdullahi Guri, reminded the National President of the need for continuous training to distinguish professional journalists from participatory journalists who spread fake news.

He further urged the National President to develop a strategic approach in advising State Governors and local government chairmen on the negative effects of social media, noting that the existing cybercrime law should be effectively enforced.

A traditional title holder and veteran journalist, Magawatan Dutse, Alhaji Salihi Suleman Birnin Kudu, shared his perspectives during the interactive session.

At the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the NUJ Jigawa chapter, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse, commended the National President and his entourage for successfully conducting the NEC meeting in the state and for providing valuable ideas aimed at advancing the union.(Hot Pen)
