All preparations have been concluded for the success of the Two Day National Security Summit being organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in Abuja.
The theme of the National Security Summit is Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building.
Addressing a Press Conference on the preparation for the event in Abuja on Tuesday, the NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, explained that the press conference is convened to provide insight into the forthcoming National Security Summit.
According to him, the decision to organize the summit is informed by the recognition that national security is a collective responsibility requiring the commitment, cooperation, and understanding of all stakeholders.
“The media and security institutions occupy strategic positions in shaping public discourse, promoting peace, and strengthening national cohesion.
"As the watchdog of society, the media has a constitutional responsibility to inform, educate, and hold authorities accountable. At the same time, security agencies remain critical partners in protecting lives, maintaining peace, and safeguarding the sovereignty of our nation. The relationship between both institutions must therefore be built on mutual respect, professionalism, trust, and a shared commitment to the common good”.
The NUJ President stressed that the summit will provide a platform for constructive engagement among media practitioners, security experts, government officials, and other relevant stakeholders to examine emerging security challenges and explore ways the media and security agencies can work together more effectively.
"We will discuss issues including responsible security reporting, combating misinformation and disinformation, protecting national interests while upholding press freedom, improving access to credible information, and strengthening collaboration between journalists and security institutions”.
Comrade Yahya said the NUJ believes that a well-informed society is a safer society, adding that Journalists must continue to report security matters with accuracy, balance, and sensitivity, while security agencies must appreciate the media as an essential partner in democratic governance and national development.
"This summit is not intended to undermine the independence of the media or the operational responsibilities of security agencies. Rather, it is designed to deepen understanding, promote dialogue, and establish a framework for cooperation that benefits Nigerians.
“We appreciate the support and partnership of stakeholders who have embraced this important initiative. We particularly acknowledge the contributions of our security institutions, government agencies, development partners, and members of the media community.
"As we prepare for this historic gathering, we call on all participants to approach the summit with an open mind and a shared vision of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.
“The NUJ remains committed to promoting journalism that strengthens democracy, supports national unity, and contributes meaningfully to nation building.
He enjoined members of the press to continue to support this initiative by creating awareness and ensuring that the objectives of the summit receive wide public attention.(Echo Express)
