Theme: “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building”

Protocol,

Distinguished colleagues from the media, ladies and gentlemen,

I welcome you all to this press conference convened to provide insight into the forthcoming National Security Summit being organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), with the theme: “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building.”

The decision to organize this summit is informed by the recognition that national security is a collective responsibility requiring the commitment, cooperation, and understanding of all stakeholders. The media and security institutions occupy strategic positions in shaping public discourse, promoting peace, and strengthening national cohesion.

As the watchdog of society, the media has a constitutional responsibility to inform, educate, and hold authorities accountable. At the same time, security agencies remain critical partners in protecting lives, maintaining peace, and safeguarding the sovereignty of our nation. The relationship between both institutions must therefore be built on mutual respect, professionalism, trust, and a shared commitment to the common good.

The summit will provide a platform for constructive engagement among media practitioners, security experts, government officials, and other relevant stakeholders to examine emerging security challenges and explore ways the media and security agencies can work together more effectively.

We will discuss issues including responsible security reporting, combating misinformation and disinformation, protecting national interests while upholding press freedom, improving access to credible information, and strengthening collaboration between journalists and security institutions.

The NUJ believes that a well-informed society is a safer society. Journalists must continue to report security matters with accuracy, balance, and sensitivity, while security agencies must appreciate the media as an essential partner in democratic governance and national development.

This summit is not intended to undermine the independence of the media or the operational responsibilities of security agencies. Rather, it is designed to deepen understanding, promote dialogue, and establish a framework for cooperation that benefits Nigerians.

We appreciate the support and partnership of stakeholders who have embraced this important initiative. We particularly acknowledge the contributions of our security institutions, government agencies, development partners, and members of the media community.

As we prepare for this historic gathering, we call on all participants to approach the summit with an open mind and a shared vision of a peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria.

The NUJ remains committed to promoting journalism that strengthens democracy, supports national unity, and contributes meaningfully to nation building.

I invite members of the press to continue to support this initiative by creating awareness and ensuring that the objectives of the summit receive wide public attention.(Global News Guru)

Thank you for your attention.
