The Benue State Judiciary on Wednesday recorded a significant milestone with the swearing-in of Hon. Justice Christine Terlumun Clement Ende as a Judge of the High Court of Benue State, bringing the total number of judges in the state to 33.
The ceremony, held today at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, was presided over by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, who described the appointment as a major step toward strengthening the administration of justice in the state.
In a statement by Kehe Hon, Information Officer, Government House Makurdi revealed that ,a key highlight of the event was the impact of Justice Ende's elevation on gender representation within the judiciary. With her appointment, the number of female judges in Benue State has increased from 13 to 14, while the overall number of judges has risen from 32 to 33.
Governor Alia noted that the development reflects his administration's commitment to inclusivity, equal opportunity, and the advancement of women in leadership and public service. He disclosed that of the 33 judges currently serving in the state, 14 are women while 19 are men, describing the ratio as a progressive balance that demonstrates that competence, character, and capacity—not gender—remain the criteria for leadership and service.
Reaffirming his administration's "He for She" philosophy, the governor stated that empowering women is essential for sustainable development and effective governance. He added that Justice Ende's appointment sends a powerful message to young girls across Benue State that dedication, hard work, and integrity can pave the way to the highest levels of public service.
Governor Alia also praised Justice Ende's distinguished career spanning more than three decades in legal practice, judicial administration, human rights advocacy, academia, and public sector service. He noted that her experience at African Bank Plc, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Federal High Court prepared her for the responsibilities of the Bench.
Describing the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, the governor urged the new judge to uphold the Constitution, protect the rights of citizens, and dispense justice without fear or favour.
In her vote of thanks, Justice Ende expressed gratitude to God for His grace and guidance throughout her professional journey. She also appreciated Governor Alia, the National Judicial Council, the Benue State Judicial Service Commission, judicial officers, family members, and well-wishers for their support.
She pledged to discharge her duties with integrity, fairness, and commitment to justice, assuring the people of Benue State of her dedication to upholding the rule of law.
The ceremony attracted judicial officers, government functionaries, legal practitioners, family members, and other dignitaries who gathered to witness the occasion, which further strengthened the Benue State Judiciary while advancing female representation on the Bench.
