The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) North Central Zonal Office Chapel, Lafia, Comrade Yusuf Usman Maina, has commended the leadership of the incumbent NUJ Chairman in Nasarawa State, Comrade Salihu Muhammad Alkali, for his transparency, accountability, and commitment to the welfare of journalists across the state.
Maina made the commendation while receiving NUJ chairmanship aspirant and current State Secretary of the union, Comrade Sunday John, alongside members of his campaign team during a courtesy visit to the FRCN North Central Zonal Office Chapel in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital.
Speaking during the visit, Maina noted that Alkali’s six-year tenure had recorded remarkable achievements with the support of members of the executive council, particularly the secretary of the union.
He said the incumbent chairman had provided purposeful leadership that enhanced the growth and unity of the union, while prioritising the welfare of journalists in the state.
The FRCN Chapel Chairman informed the campaign team that he would consult members of the chapel regarding their position on Sunday John’s aspiration ahead of the NUJ State Council election scheduled for July 20, 2026.
According to him, the outcome of the consultation is likely to be positive, stressing that the union requires competent, reliable, and committed leaders capable of defending the interests of journalists.
Maina further stated that the chairmanship aspirant had presented impressive ideas and programmes aimed at strengthening the union if elected chairman.
Earlier, Chairman of the Sunday John Campaign Team, Mr. Isaac Upkoju, said the aspirant had played a significant role in the achievements recorded under the leadership of Comrade Alkali.
Upkoju argued that the union needed continuity to sustain the legacy projects and reforms initiated by the current administration.
He maintained that Sunday John remains the most qualified candidate to consolidate on the gains of the past six years, having served as secretary of the union throughout the period.
The campaign team chairman therefore appealed to journalists across Nasarawa State to support Sunday John’s bid for the NUJ chairmanship.
In his remarks, Sunday John thanked members of the FRCN Chapel for receiving his team and assured journalists that he would justify the confidence reposed in him if elected.
He pledged to build on existing achievements and work towards advancing the welfare and professional interests of journalists across Nasarawa State.(Daily News Breakers)
