Two police officers were killed on Sunday night after gunmen ambushed a police team along the Amansea–Ndiora–Ndiukwuenu–Awa–Ufuma Road in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The officers were reportedly returning from an official assignment when armed attackers, who had allegedly laid in wait in a nearby bush, opened fire on them, killing two officers on the spot.

Eyewitnesses said the sudden gunfire caused panic among residents and travellers using the road. A tricycle operator who witnessed the aftermath of the attack said he was returning from Ezira when he heard repeated gunshots and quickly turned back to seek safety.

According to him, after the shooting subsided, he continued his journey and discovered the bodies of two police officers lying beside their patrol vehicle.

A video circulating on social media showed the slain officers lying in a pool of blood on the roadside, while a narrator called on authorities to intervene.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, said the command had launched an investigation and intensified efforts to apprehend those responsible.

He stated that the officers were attacked while returning from an assignment and assured residents that security agencies were working to track down the perpetrators.

The police commissioner also announced plans to visit the scene of the attack and review security measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.

Orutugu further advised motorists and members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid suspicious checkpoints not manned by clearly identifiable police personnel or official police vehicles, urging them to alert nearby police formations whenever they encounter such situations.(PGSNews)
