Kwara State Governor, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has been applauded for approving a 30 per cent peculiar allowance for workers in state-owned media houses, agencies and parastatals.
The state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) described the move as a morale booster for professionals in the state media industry.
A joint statement by the state Chairman of the Council, Abdullateef ‘Lanre Ahmed, and the Secretary, Mahmood Olayinka Alaya on Tuesday, said the approval has now placed media workers on the same pedestal with their counterparts in the mainstream civil service already enjoying the allowance.
The NUJ described the governor’s gesture as timely and worker-friendly, noting that journalists and media workers render essential services round the clock, including weekends and public holidays.
According to the union, the allowance would not only improve workers’ morale and productivity but also cushion the adverse effects of the prevailing economic situation many families have to endure.
The council stressed that the approval reflects the AbdulRazaq administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare and recognition of the critical role of the media in promoting good governance, accountability and public enlightenment.
The NUJ appreciated the Acting Head of Service, Dr Mercy Olufunke Shittu, top government officials, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kwara State and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their support and solidarity, which contributed to the successful actualisation of the allowance.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and responsible journalism, assuring the government and people of Kwara State of continued support toward sustaining peace, development and democratic values in the state.(Windgate News)
