As the dust settles on the fire outbreak at Macaulay Street in Bonny, Rivers State, the Bonny Utility Company (BUC) has expressed sympathy with the victims, just as it debunked insinuations that the incident was caused by erratic power outages in the area.
General Manager of BUC, Dominic Dung came out with this on Thursday, May 7, 2026 while responding to an enquiry by Kristina Reports on insinuations that erratic power outages caused the fire incident.
He stated that “as much as we share the pain that victims, especially business owners in the area are going through due to the losses incurred in the fire incident, we also wish to state categorically that the incident has nothing to do with BUC facilities in the area.
“Checks by our assessment team reveal that there was no challenge on the transformer feeding the burnt areas. So, the fire did not result from any of our systems there.”
“For the other areas, we have a trip as a result of a fault on TX 1, Park Community, and after resolving the issue power was restored. For context, this is outside and far away from Macaulay Street.”
He assured that the company will continue to provide excellent services to residents of Bonny LGA, stressing that the “BUC works within protocols and procedures which are in line with global best practices”.
Dung advised electricity consumers in Bonny to adhere to safety rules and regulations relating to how electricity is utilized, urging them to conserve energy, switch off appliances not in use and install circuit breakers that trip off the light whenever there is a challenge.
“We are doing all within our powers to ensure everyone has power, regularly, stable and affordable but consumers also have a duty to protect themselves, their appliances and residences.”
