As the global community commemorates World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) joins journalists and media stakeholders worldwide in reaffirming the fundamental importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in advancing democracy, human rights, and national development.
This year’s theme, _“Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,”_ speaks directly to the Nigerian experience. It underscores the critical role of journalism in fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting accountability in a complex security environment.
Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi
National President, led National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ notes with cautious optimism the recent improvement in relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media.
