‎As the global community commemorates World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) joins journalists and media stakeholders worldwide in reaffirming the fundamental importance of a free, independent, and responsible press in advancing democracy, human rights, and national development.

‎This year’s theme, _“Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,”_ speaks directly to the Nigerian experience. It underscores the critical role of journalism in fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting accountability in a complex security environment.

Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi

‎National President, led National Executive Council (NEC) of the NUJ notes with cautious optimism the recent improvement in relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media.
