The Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has commended journalists across Nigeria for their commitment to responsible and ethical reporting, emphasizing that balanced journalism remains critical to strengthening governance and democratic accountability.
Governor Otu gave the commendation on Monday during the inspection of a newly installed 15KVA solar power system provided by the state government at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Calabar.
The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, noted that the media’s consistent and objective coverage of government programmes and developmental projects, especially during the electioneering period, reflects the press’s dedication to its constitutional role as the watchdog of society.
He stated that Cross River State has continued to benefit from fair and balanced reporting that highlights governance issues with accuracy and professionalism, adding that such reporting fosters public trust and promotes informed civic engagement.
Governor Otu attributed the cordial relationship between his administration and the media to a deliberate policy of openness, access to information, and respect for the role of journalists in nation-building.
He stressed that the installation of the solar power system underscores his administration’s commitment to improving the working conditions of journalists and creating an enabling environment for effective media practice.
The Governor also urged journalists to continually upgrade their skills to meet evolving demands in the profession, particularly in a rapidly changing information landscape.
He further lauded the Chairman of the Cross River State Council of the NUJ, Archibong Bassey, for her pragmatic leadership and innovative strides at the Press Centre, describing the transformation as unprecedented and in line with global best practices.
Reaffirming his administration’s stance, Governor Otu said the government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and sustained engagement with the media, stressing that an informed citizenry is essential for effective governance.
He assured that the state government would continue to prioritize the welfare of journalists and support initiatives that enhance professionalism within the media space.
In her remarks, Comrade Archibong Bassey expressed appreciation to Governor Otu for the intervention, noting that the solar installation would guarantee uninterrupted power supply at the Press Centre and significantly improve media operations.
She reiterated the commitment of journalists in Cross River State to continue providing accurate and responsible coverage of government policies, programmes, and projects in line with professional ethics.(News Cross River state)
