The Taraba State Government has commenced the Ndibam Gully Erosion Control Project in Takum Local Government Area as part of efforts to address environmental degradation and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The project was flagged off on Monday by the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. John Kizito Bonzena, who represented Governor Agbu Kefas at the ceremony.

Bonzena conveyed the governor’s message, noting that although Kefas had intended to attend in person, he was engaged in other official duties, while reaffirming the administration’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges.

He said the project forms part of a broader strategy to protect communities, preserve farmlands and safeguard critical infrastructure, adding that Takum remains a priority area for environmental interventions.

The Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hajiya Aishat A. Barde, commended the governor’s proactive approach, describing the initiative as a critical step toward sustainable development and land restoration.

She also acknowledged the support of the World Bank under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, noting that it would enhance livelihoods and improve environmental conditions.

The ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Clement Giwa, assured that the project would be implemented in line with sustainable land management objectives, while the Chief of Takum, Barr. Sonpiya Danlami Ahmadu, pledged the community’s cooperation.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Tafarki Agbadu Eneme, and the member representing Takum II Constituency, Hon. Abubakar Tanko Jolly, described the project as timely and beneficial.

In a vote of thanks, the Chairman of Takum Local Government Council, Dr. Benjamin Bako, expressed appreciation to the state government, noting that the project would help safeguard farmlands, restore livelihoods and strengthen climate resilience in the area.(The News Pointer.Com)
