Mallam Nasir El-rufai will miss the ongoing National Convention of the African Democratic Congress as the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of his bail application to April 21, 2026.

The development means that the former Kaduna State governor will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, thereby preventing him from participating in the party’s crucial convention holding in Abuja.

El-Rufai, a key figure within the ADC, is facing charges bordering on alleged abuse of office and financial misconduct. He had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

At the resumed hearing, his legal team urged the court to grant him bail, arguing that he is not a flight risk and is willing to stand trial. However, the ICPC opposed the application, maintaining that the defendant should remain in custody pending the determination of the case.

After taking arguments from both sides, the court declined to give an immediate ruling and instead adjourned the matter to April 21 for the hearing of the bail application.

The adjournment effectively keeps El-Rufai in detention at a time when his party is holding a significant political gathering, where major decisions are expected to shape its direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Observers say his absence from the convention may have implications for internal consultations within the party, given his influence, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The case is expected to continue on the adjourned date.(Arewa Vanguard News)
