The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has called for enhanced collaboration between the media and anti-corruption agencies to effectively combat corruption and promote transparency in Nigeria.
Speaking at the ICPC–NUJ Stakeholder Engagement held in Abuja on March 26, 2026, Yahya described the gathering as a critical step in addressing one of the major obstacles to national development.
He emphasized that corruption remains a significant challenge to Nigeria’s growth, undermining institutions and eroding public trust. Tackling this issue, he noted, requires collective responsibility and sustained cooperation across all sectors.
According to Yahya, the partnership between the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigeria Union of Journalists is both strategic and necessary, given the media’s role in promoting accountability and informing citizens.
Journalists serve as the watchdogs of society, uncovering facts and ensuring public office holders are held accountable. This aligns with the ICPC’s mandate of enforcement, prevention, and public enlightenment in the fight against corruption.
He stressed that effective collaboration must be grounded in professionalism, accuracy, fairness, and mutual respect. Government agencies should remain transparent and provide reliable information to support responsible journalism.
Yahya urged stakeholders to move beyond rhetoric and foster a culture of accountability, where integrity becomes a shared value and public confidence in governance is restored.
He expressed optimism that ongoing cooperation between the media and anti-corruption agencies would reinforce systems that deter corruption and promote good governance in the country.(Nigeria this Moment)
