The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has called for closer and more effective collaboration between the media and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to strengthen Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight.
Yahya made the call during an engagement with officials of the anti-corruption agency, where he stressed the strategic role of the media in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
He noted that corruption remains a major impediment to national development, stressing that stronger synergy between journalists and anti-corruption institutions would help expose corrupt practices and deepen public awareness.
The NUJ president emphasised that the media, as watchdog of society, must be empowered and actively engaged in anti-corruption campaigns through access to credible information, capacity building, and institutional support.
According to him, effective collaboration would not only strengthen investigative journalism but also ensure that accurate and timely information reaches the public, thereby fostering trust in governance processes.
Yahya further urged the ICPC to sustain open communication channels with journalists and provide necessary support that would enable the media to carry out its constitutional responsibility without hindrance.
He also reiterated the commitment of the NUJ to professional and ethical journalism, noting that responsible reporting remains critical in the collective effort to tackle corruption and promote national development.
In response, officials of the commission acknowledged the vital role of the media in the anti-corruption drive, describing journalists as indispensable partners in exposing wrongdoing and mobilising public support against corrupt practices.
They stressed that the ICPC would continue to strengthen its engagement with the media through strategic partnerships, information sharing, and public enlightenment initiatives.
Stakeholders noted that sustained collaboration between both institutions is expected to reinforce Nigeria’s anti-corruption framework and enhance accountability across public institutions.(SKY NEWS)
