The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC has called on media practitioners across the country to utilize their platforms, experience and expertise to expose corrupt practices and reawake public consciousness to discipline and good conduct.
This is the resolution reached by stakeholders during a workshop on Effective Collaboration and Corruption Prevention, organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.
First to speak was the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu who described the media as a critical stakeholder whose responsibilities in the fight against corruption could not be quantified.
According to him, the media should not see herself as an observer in the fight against corruption but a major actor and front line advocate for integrity, transparency, and long-term institutional trust.
He explained that the engagement with the media was just a reminder and an opportunity to further build a strategic synergy for positive results.
He promised that ICPC would continue to live above board and justify the confidence reposed in the institution by the people and the act that establishes it.
In a lecture titled:” Reinvigorating the National Anti Corruption Strategy (2022-2026) a post Assessment Roadmap for the fourth Estate, the former Vice Chancellor, Federal University Kashere, Gombe State, Emeritus Professor Umaru Pate urged Journalists to engage in more investigative reportage to expose abuse of office, corruption and all illegalities in the society.
According to him, the media is backed by the law to report illegalities in the society urging media practitioners to maximize such constitutional rights.
Speaking separately at the event, the President Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya, the Director General, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria and other media actors affirmed that media has always been in the forefront at exposing corrupt practices and would be continue to work hand in hand with relevant agencies to purge the nation of corruption.(RoundOff News)
