Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the keenly contested Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, recording a decisive landslide over his closest rival, Dr. Moses Ogidi Paul of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Maikalangu, the incumbent AMAC chairman and the anointed candidate of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, polled 40,295 votes to defeat Paul, who secured 12,109 votes to place a distant second.

Paul’s candidacy enjoyed the open backing of prominent ADC chieftain and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose candidate, Mr. Zadna Dantani, stepped down less than 48 hours to the election following the intervention of Wike, garnered 3,398 votes.

Announcing the results, the AMAC collation officer, Prof. Andrew Abue, disclosed that 2,336 votes were rejected, while 62,861 valid votes were recorded out of a total of 65,197 votes cast. He added that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters, with 65,676 accredited for the poll.

Formally declaring the winner, Prof. Abue said: “That Maikalangu of the APC, having scored the highest number of votes and satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
