The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, has renewed calls for a dedicated Special Salary Structure for media practitioners in Nigeria, decrying the meager earnings and hazardous working conditions journalists endure nationwide.
Speaking upon his arrival to Anambra State on Wednesday, 9th September 2026, the NUJ President emphasised that establishing a standardised salary package for journalists has become imperative to cushion economic hardship and preserve the integrity of the fourth estate of the realm.
The President announced union-led welfare initiatives and the roll-out of the NUJ Health Insurance Scheme. He urged all members across state councils to key into the scheme to ensure seamless access to quality healthcare for themselves and their families.
Earlier the President on arrival at the Chinua Achebe International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, was received by a delegation of the South-East Zone C Executive Council of the NUJ. The welcoming team was led by the Zonal Vice President (Zone C), Comrade Ezenwa Adiukwu, alongside the National Treasurer and other national officers from the South-East region, who are also in Akwa for their National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
The visit marks the grand finale of the 2026 NUJ Anambra State Council Press Week, a week-long series of events celebrating 35 years of journalism practice, growth, and development in Anambra State. This year’s celebration will feature the conferment of the prestigious 2026 NUJ Man of the Year Awards. The event is anchored on the theme: “NUJ Anambra, 35 years on: Reporting with truth, responsibility and service”.
