The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has mobilised a multi-agency emergency response following the collapse of a building on Abidjan Street, Wuse Zone 3, Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, after the Command received a distress call alerting authorities to the building collapse.
The Police Command said its response team, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Edward Akaniyene, and the Area Commander, Metro, ACP Georgelyn Ufomadu, promptly proceeded to the scene.
On arrival, the police team immediately joined other emergency agencies in commencing search and rescue operations at the site.
The operation involves personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Fire Service (FFS), Security Service Department, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and other relevant emergency response agencies.
According to the Command, preliminary investigations revealed that the collapsed building had earlier been marked and sealed by the Department of Development Control, Abuja.
Despite the collapse, the Command said no victim had been confirmed as of the time of issuing its statement.
However, search and rescue teams have continued to work through the rubble to establish whether any person may be trapped underneath the collapsed structure.
The Police Command said investigations are also ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the possible cause of the collapse.
The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain calm and security-conscious while the rescue operation continues.
It also advised members of the public to keep away from the affected area and cooperate with emergency responders to ensure that rescue personnel can operate without obstruction.
