Media Professionals in Katsina State have expressed concern over low morals and poor professionalism among Journalists in Nigeria.
They made this known at a Stakeholders Engagement organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, in Katsina.
The council’s Grand Patron, Professor Sani Lugga, attributed the low moral to partly poor welfare, unethical practices and the proliferation of social media.
He urged government authorities and media organisations to improve staff welfare and restore public confidence in journalism.
The guest speaker, Professor Mukhtar Alkasim, called for full professional recognition of journalism in Nigeria.
He identified bribery and corruption as major challenges undermining journalism practice.
The council’s chairman, Aminu Dandagoro, said plans had been concluded to integrate genuine online media practitioners into the union.
He said the initiative was aimed at promoting professionalism, accountability and responsible use of digital platforms.
The engagement, themed “Journalism, Democracy and Institutional Renewal: Charting a New Course for the Katsina State NUJ”, brought together media practitioners, former NUJ chairmen and representatives of media organisations across the state.(Radio Nigeria)
