Niger Delta Games Torch Begins Historic Nine-State Tour from Calabar

The Games Torch for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games was officially ignited in Calabar, Cross River State, on Monday, February 9, setting in motion a ceremonial tour of the nine states that make up the Niger Delta region ahead of the Games in Benin City.The Torch, a powerful symbol of unity, peace and sporting excellence, is scheduled to pass through the capitals of all participating states before arriving at the host city for the opening ceremony.In Calabar, renowned athlete and Torch bearer, Patience Okon George, led sports officials and athletes from the U.J. Esuene Stadium to the Government House, where the Torch was formally received by the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, alongside Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, organisers of the Games.The event was marked by a colourful procession featuring youths adorned in the iconic Calabar Carnival costumes, dancing energetically to traditional Efik rhythms blaring from sound systems mounted on moving trucks, creating a festive atmosphere across the city.Speaking on behalf of Governor Bassey Otu, Deputy Governor Odey assured Cross River athletes of full government support, particularly in the areas of equipment provision and welfare, urging them to compete with fairness and determination in their quest for medals.Sir Ikpokpo, in his remarks, applauded members of the State Liaison Committee for staging a vibrant and memorable Torch Tour in Calabar, encouraging other states to showcase their cultural uniqueness as the Torch moves through the region.According to the itinerary released by the organisers, the Games Torch will move next to Akwa Ibom State on February 10, then to Abia State on February 11, Imo State on February 12, and Rivers State on February 13. Bayelsa State will host the Torch on February 14, followed by Delta State on February 16, before it proceeds to Ondo State on February 18.The Torch will eventually light the cauldron at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on the opening day of the Games, symbolising the official commencement of the competition. At the closing ceremony, the Torch will be handed over to the next host state.The Niger Delta Games is organised by Dunamis-Icon Limited and sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
