In line with the recent directive issued by Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, mandating local government chairmen to rehabilitate three basic schools each across the state’s sixteen local government areas, some council leaders have begun taking concrete steps to implement the policy in their respective communities.
The governor gave the directive on February 4, 2026, during a five-day training workshop for permanent secretaries, directors in the state civil service, and newly elected local government chairmen. He charged them to prioritise the rehabilitation of at least three basic schools in their areas as part of his administration’s commitment to free and compulsory education.
A visit by NATIONAL ACCORD correspondent to Lau Local Government Area revealed that the council chairman, Comrade Peter Julius, has already commenced renovation works at Lau Central Primary School. The project has seen the demolition of several dilapidated structures using heavy equipment, while construction of new facilities is currently underway.
Speaking with our correspondent at the site of the rehabilitation, Peter said he has already cue behind the “Moving Forward Agenda” of Governor Kefas since he assumed office two months ago especially in the area of education.
“We have so far engaged security across our schools to erase fear of kidnapping, we have paid 75 percent out… N200,000 school fees of students from Lau LGA who are schooling at Na’Ibi School of Nursing, now we are going to immediately renovate 3 basic schools as directed by His Excellency Agbu Kefas.
“We shall not stop at renovation of structures, all the basic learning materials and the entire environment is going to look befitting like where we are going to train our future leaders”, Peter stated.
Also in Takum LGA, the council chairman, Hon. Bako Benjamin during his unscheduled visit at Ishamiya Primary School, Rimi Primary School and Government Commercial Secondary School all in Takum, said arrangements have been concluded to embark on massive rehabilitation of the schools.
He revealed that the aim is in line with Governor Kefas’ agenda to make education not just free and compulsory in the state but conducive for the future leaders of the state.
