ADC says Judgment Sacking Candidates “Suspicious”, Heads to Appeal Court

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has reacted to the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja affecting its leadership and the candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

A statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu as an attempt to weaken the opposition, alleging that its timing, barely a day after the party’s massive rally in Sokoto, was suspicious.

The party expressed concern that the judgment could affect thousands of its candidates seeking elective offices at the local, state and federal levels, insisting that the matter goes beyond its leadership or the political ambition of any individual.

Citing an earlier judgment delivered by Justice Musa Liman of the same court on July 2, 2026, which affirmed the legitimacy of the Senator David Mark-led National Working Committee, the ADC argued that a court of coordinate jurisdiction cannot overturn the decision of another court of equal jurisdiction.

The ADC which signified its intention to challenge the verdict of the trial court at the Court of Appeal urged the judiciary to uphold democratic principles and resist any attempt to undermine political competition.

The ADC also called on its members nationwide to remain calm and law-abiding as it pursues legal remedies.
